Sustainability

Recognized across the globe, as the country that sets the top standard for sustainable fisheries, the Maldivian fishing technique ensures that no harm comes to their vast underwater ecosystem and various endangered species. It is with these values that were handed down generations, that Ensis Fisheries was formed in 2002, with a vision to expand the reach of community-based artisanal fishermen (local fishermen) and deliver their fresh wild captures from Maldivian seas to customers across the globe. As a firm believer of sustainable fisheries, Ensis strives to be an example to the rest of the world. The company ensures that every single fish that is delivered to their customers is individually caught in the most environmentally friendly manner, via pole-and-line fishing or hand-line fishing.

The company founders are from the Maldives, a tropical gem surrounded by the warmest ocean of the Earth, with 1192 minute coral islands forming this tiny nation, in the Indian Ocean. The crystal-clear and pristine waters of the country are home to an abundance of aquatic life and magnificent species of fish. As the second biggest industry in the Maldives, fishing remains an irreplaceable part of Maldivian history, employing over half the local labor force. Its tuna resources are a vital part of the country’s economy and greatly impact the day-to-day survival of local fishing communities. The art of fishing remains unchanged for generations, where fish are individually caught by the traditional form of pole-and-line fishing or hand-line fishing.

The true value of Ensis products comes from a great respect for the seas and environment, a deep love for the sustainable art of fishing and its communities. “Our goal is to give our fishermen, in recognition of their unique, sustainable fishing method and the quality product through positioning their fishery as the staple of excellence within the international market.” Ensis is a proud member of the IPNLF and has attained MSC certification among many other awards in its pursuit of the best form of sustainable fisheries.
